The UNGHENI CHESS CLUB
Ungheni chess club was set up within the Municipality Sports School for youth and children, where there are 2 chess coaches (Vladimir Pricladov and Iulian Bacalu). Ungheni chess club is attended by 150 children and young people aged between 6-35 years old. Up to 30 children and youth participate in the daily chess workout. About Moldova
Republic of Moldova is a landlocked state in Eastern Europe, bordered to the west by Romania and to the north, east and south by Ukraine. It is one of the most densely populated European countries, with a population of 4.1 million, including the breakaway Transnistrian region. The country is divided into thirty-two districts and three municipalities. Moldova occupies an area of 33,843.5 km2.

The Republic of Moldova declared its independence in 1991. The capital of Moldova is Chisinau. The total length of the national boundaries is 1,389 km, including 939 km with Ukraine and 450 km with Romania. Population of Moldova accounts about 3.5 million inhabitants.

The Republic of Moldova belongs to the group of countries located in the Black Sea Basin. It maintains close mutually advantageous commercial ties with these countries as well as the countries located in the Danube Basin. The southern border of the country extends almost as far as the Black Sea, which can be accessed through the Nistru Liman and the Danube River.

The physical and geographical position of the Republic of Moldova has determined the specific features of its natural conditions. The central part of Moldova is occupied by Codrii woods. The climate of the Republic of Moldova is moderately continental.

Athough it has a small area, the Republic of Moldova as a tourist destination has a great potential represented first of all by the geomorphologic aspect of its territory – an unusual diversity of landscape reservations or scenery and unique geological monuments of European and world value.


UNGHENI CITY OVERVIEW
Ungheni is a city in Moldova, situated in the west-center part of the country on the bank of the Prut river, the second largest river in Moldova. The city extends on a length of 9 km along the border with Romania, being situated at a height of 62 meters above the sea level.

Ungheni city is located at a distance of 105 kilometers from Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, 85 kilometers from Bălți, the second largest city in Moldova, 18 kilometers by railway from Iași, an important industrial, cultural and academic center in Romania.

Ungheni is an important railway junction and customs border point, known as „the Western Gateway in Europe”. In the recent years, it has become an important industrial and cultural center. In 2010, the city was declared “Youth Capital 2011”.

The city of Ungheni is a part and residence center of Ungheni district with a population of 38,000 inhabitants.

Situated closely to the European Union on the river Prut, the city ofUngheni is a locality full of history. The first document dates from August 1462. Initially, the locality was called Unghiul (angle), probably because the river Prut made here a perfect angle.

The most decisive role in the city evolution belonged to the construction of the Chișinău – Ungheni –Iași railway, that was built in 1871-1875.

Currently, Ungheni is an important cultural and economic centre with a high qualified human potential. There are 2104 small and medium enterprises. In 2002 the Free Economic Zone „Ungheni – Business” was set up.

In spite of all problems, now, Ungheni City concentrates the biggest part of the region of the intellectual and industrial potential. Ungheni City succeeded to become an important economic center with native and mix capital (Free Economic Zone). It has a human potential with a high qualification. It is an industrial center with a commanding potential of production and an adequate infrastructure.

The carpet, ceramics, wines and divines, canned goods, confections, articles of ferro-concrete and wood, sausages, bakery productions, trade and services are the main fields of economic development.
Now, the educational institutions are in process of reforming, diversifying and adjusting to the new time standards. In the City there are:
* 6 preschool institutions with 1900 children;
* 6 institutions of primary and general education (primary schools – 1, lyceums - 5) with 6100 pupils;
* a vocational school with 500 students;
* 3 colleges – Medicine College, Boarder Police College and Agro-Industrial College with more than 700 students;
* Educational institutions - a music school, an arts school, 2 sports schools, Center of community services for children at risk „Home for Everyone”, Youth Resource Center, Creation Center for Children, Center of Rehabilitation and Social Integration of the Elderly, Center of social integration of youth ”CREDO”, House of Romanian Language, History and Ethnography Museum, 5 libraries, a Palace of Culture.

The City has a complete hospital network, general and specialized medical assistance that are well represented.

The civil society is represented by over 90 NGOs that work in the fields of community development, education, health, culture, youth, social assistance, sport, people’s rights, environment, 4 religious associations, a community foundation that works in the field of community development.

Last years the network of sewerage, natural gas and energy, routes network regarding the public transport that covers the whole territory of Ungheni City were extended. The City has heat agent. The local public administration elaborated a complex plan of modernizing the water, sewerage and wastewater treatment, gasification and street lighting systems.

Ungheni City is one of the most developed localities of the Republic of Moldova as the City of
Chisinau, Bălți, Bender and Tiraspol.
